Open days of the university is an important public event. It allows applicants visit the university and experience it in first-hand. Open days show applicants what is on offer and can usually tell them more about a university than they can glean from a prospectus. During the open day, applicants have a chance to see campus, local area, accommodation, lecture theaters, etc. They can talk to staff members, current students and other applicants and discover what their future university live could be like. Many applicants might use open days to compare different universities and courses they are applying to and see which one would suit them best.
The aim of this nine-month project is to develop a web-based application which can be used to allow university applicants to attend and experience aspects of open days without any need of traveling to the university. The research shows that there are two main reasons why applicants cannot visit open day: it is time consuming, it costs a lot. Through an agile-based approach, the application was developed to allow applicants to (1) make virtual campus tours, (2) sign up for live events, (3) chat with staff members, students, and other applicants, (4) view photos and 360-degree photos of campus area and premises and (5) read articles about campus, premises, Dundee city, etc.
The final solution is web-based application that is fully manageable by administrators and staff members. The application is developed using PHP Yii Framework, combined with jQuery, AJAX, Google maps API and other libraries and APIs. Users of this system (applicants) will get many benefits in terms of saving money and time on traveling to Dundee.
